Door 24- Ho, Ho, Ho!
Ho, ho, ho brush people!
It's here the final day of our calendar. First at all we want to thank you for reading through all of our articles during the month and the patience with us as we were sometimes a bit late. But I think we can be proud of ourselves -and especially Martin who wrote most of the articles and did night shifts to please you people out there- that we managed 22 (two of the articles count each as two articles) articles with content and this special article.

Door 21/22...-Tasty Ultra Marinara Step by Step
Hello
again,
for today and yesterday I'm a
bit late again, but I hope that the content of this post was worth the waiting.
It's a painting step by step of an Ultramarine in I would call it higher
tabletop standard.
I planned
to paint an Ultramarine with my airbrush for
a while now, after I saw the step by step by Arsies on how he paints an Ultramarine .

Door 20 - What I like about the following paintjob
Jubilae friends of paint!
As I didn't want this day to go into history without a door in our calendar, I'll try to manage something...
I had this idea a while ago and now is my chance to write it down. It's kind of like giving critique in a forum, but I just want to talk about the things I like about the following paintjob and what I see in the miniature.

Calendar Info
As more and more of our guest writers won't make it till christmas my time schedule is pretty fucked up.
I am sorry for not reaching the 24 articles but reality and plans sometimes diverge...
We will definitely have door 24, with a big surprise for our fellow readers, 20 to 23...well I can't promise to be honest.
Have a nice weekend anyways!

Door 15 - Setting up a "theater of war"
So, a few days ago, I reviewed a roman centurion. Now that he is cleaned and assembled as far as necessary for painting - I spare you the boring process - it is time for the first works on the base. The basis for this will be a 4*4 cm plinth by Sockelmacher.
Before the actual building will begin, I have to decide the place were the brave centurion will defend the Roman Empire against its manifold enemies. In the first article I already determined, that the little fellow could be dated into the first century AD, probably the first half.

Door 15 - is delayed a little while
Seems our door thinks it's an easter egg and hides. Sry, had some massive problems with the web connection, it comes and goes, no chance to upload the videos.
Right now family is calling, so I am back around 7 and hope the problem will be fixed then.
Sorry for the waiting time!

Door 14 - Finishing the cliff
Ahhh twenty hours of sleep are a good fill for a day. Damn I was so burnt out after the last weeks.
The three day gaming table madness was the final nail in the coffin and my body took what it needed.
But, the day has 24 hours I hear you say....and those 4 were dedicated to you, our beloved readers!
The next three days and doors are ready to upload!
Today I also would like to talk about some things I learned during the last weeks, the gaming table and such stuff, so if you like,

Door 12 - A Review - S.P.Q.R.
Salve.
It's an Miniature Unboxing - again. After Klaus' nice one, I'll do mine - but different, actually it's more the beginning of a series, where I will paint the miniature step by step an walk you through the painting itself and the.... one could call it "fluff".
The Miniature itself is the "Roman Officer" by Nocturna Models. It is a 70 mm resin cast - at least concerning the scale. With the crista the officer easily stands somewhere between 85-90 mm tall.
The mini comes in a nice steal box, looking exactly like the one's Knight Models is using -good choice Nocturna, i really love those.
First I have to excuse myself, I already assembled parts of the miniature, a the impatiently I started without remembering to take pictures of the first unboxing.

This is my first miniature unpacked article ever, and I don't really know if it's one. So first the stuff I'm used to read on miniature unpacked articles.
The usual blablabla...
This Article is about the 75 mm scale "Freebooter 1697" from Alexandros Models, sculpted by one of my favourite sculpters, Allan Carrasco.
The miniature comes in a nice cardboard box with a cover wrapped around it. On the cover you can see the paintjob.

Door 7 - I'm a rich man,not your b*tch man! - Base Step by Step
Walk up the stairs till there are no more!
This time it's a kind of step by step, because the steps are big paces...didn't take enough pictures...sorry...but I think this article will give you an idea how I build the base.
It's getting started in here, so take out all your tools....the miniature this base is build for is a kind of spanish noble man sculpted by Degra and distributed bei Figone ( http://www.figone.fr/ ). So I planned him standing in his mansion on black marble stairs, behind him a huuuuuge portrait of who? himself of cause!

Door 4 - Itsy bitsy cyber spiders - Base Step by Step
01001000011000010110110001101100011011110000110100001010 my dear cyber friends!
A while ago I painted my first Infinity miniature, a very dynamic kind of cyber ninja lady. When I thought about the base the idea came up that she would be invading an enemy base with the help of an army of cyber spiders. The spiders are helping her to make it hard for the enemys to spot her.
How would the spiders invade the building and how can I show that they help her?

Today brings you another video! I think you start to understand why the last weeks and our youtube channel were rather quite.
And to make it even better, its another complete step by step tutorial showing you the making of my latest commission piece, a heavy weathered White Scar Vindicator. I promised this to many of our readers, who asked how the Bike Captain was done. This is my new approach to the armies tanks but don't worry, it can also be used on infantry. Also those will have their own tutorial in the future.

Door One - I can walk on water, which is frozen -Base Step by Step
It's "this time of the year" again, crowded malls, "Last Christmas" played at least a thousand times per hour (Challenge your friends, who will be the last one to hear it this year? Two years ago I had the golden run, not hearing this damn song once) and tons of cookies, hot wine and candles.
But also the time of sitting with your dear ones, using the Saturdays to relax and celebrate.
For me, it means working much more at the store to deal with more customers and so painting something and having nice hobby chats every day. It means having Advent Calenders for my cats, my old bear calendar that went along with me through 3 flats and 18 years of life for my self and another that my girl sent me from Japan. Baking cookies with my friends, all to prepare for the big evening when goose and presents will mark our Christmas under an oldschool tree. I love it.
As a fanatic Christmas addict it is my pleasure to share some of my love for this time with you. We will accompany you through the next 24 days of Christmas preparation, cozy grog evenings and shopping madness.
The first door of our calender is a gift from Klaus to you, as he explains how he made a very nice and frosty base for his ice demon.
Thanks Bro for this tutorial, and to all our readers, have fun reading and trying!
-Martin

Advent Calendar announcement
Good morning people.
I am really happy that todays post is possible, as it brings some of my favorite painters and friends from our community together!
The last weeks didn't see as many posts as usual and that had a good reason, as I am preparing something big. (At least for my possibilities and the scale of our Blog)
From December 1st to 24th you will find our advent calendar here on our site!
I am really happy to announce that we will feature some guest writers that have very different views on our hobby and/ or making a living with it. Right now I have the confirmation of a famous box art painter (I am thrilled that he will post here, as i am absolutely in love with his miniatures), a modeller / caster and some friends from a rather big painting studio. More are planned, but we will have to see how their schedules are filled.
You will also find new tutorials (at least one big video, tank, terrain we will see) and reviews about some stuff that can make life easier for us or are found in places one wouldn't expect them.
Every day a new surprise, tutorial, review or guest article! Maybe, some giveaways will hide there as well?Thats hell of a lot posts and I am happy to add that much content to our site and think there will be something for everybody.
Please feel free to share this with your friends, you won't regret it I promise. Now I wish you a terrible exciting waiting time until December 1st...
Have a nice day all of you!

Hey folks, today two new buildings I repainted for our local store.
Had a day off yesterday and decided to tackle them. I think they are quite cool for an evening of painting.
There are a few to go, but i am really excited to see them all together in the end!

Paper and Plastic...
Hello out there,
todays post will be some back to the roots, as I wrote about the things I think behind the painting then.
Some of you might remember the article One night - One miniature or thoughts about diversity. This one had some attention and made his way round the world wide web.
I also wrote about every day life situations and philosophy back then, and I'm starting to feel this was an important part of this blog and should start again. We don't paint a miniature every day, but we think all the time.
So let's get to business, shall we?
Today I want to talk about some serious issues for most of us, my personal all time enemy money and our collections. Let's start with the first.
You can admire or hate it, you just don't get around it, unless you decide to live in the woods. We all have to pay our bills, our rents and daily needs. Maybe we have some loved pet or friends and partners we like to support. Some things necessary, some not in everyones eyes but even more important in my opinion.
And then, there is the hobby. To assure you, this won't be bashing around how expensive our hobby became. Most hobbies are. And sometimes, this is fine. As long as capitalism lives on, you won't get quality for many people cheap. Thats just the way it works. I came to the conclusion that I could walk away any time, quit my gaming and painting or change to cheaper variants. This is up to me, but I feel quite well with the things I do right now (this is what a hobby should do besides).
Several questions appear.
What worth has money for one self?
Do you like the big numbers on your financial accounts? Then you probably should consider a different hobby. I think most of us won't ever be that rich to through money around us. This love will be expensive. It means buying armies and rulebooks if you are a gamer, or expensive miniatures produced in small batches and materials if you are a painter. For most of us, it means not to spend money on other things, to say no to other stuff.
And for me this is absolutely ok.
I used to dreamed of tons of money, just as nearly everyone does at any point of his life. The dream became bitter with the time, while the things I bought (in this case all the stuff that fills my studio now and allows me to work with great possibilities) brought joy. With the years my opinion on money changed (as did my political point of view, but thats another story). I could have some thousand Euro laying around, or being pushed into a car, partying or what the heck there are enough examples. The simple fact is, this wouldn't make me happy.
I embrace what seems to be a poor life to other people, that don't know how much color or expressing one self is worth for the soul.
How much money do I actually need to spend to keep on going?
I think this hobby wouldn't be that expensive, if people (I count me in here) could handle that question. Unprimed army? Ok, you want to play. But how many things gathering dust in their sprues do you have?
Well, let's say with ashamed voice there were and are many of them here.
I got tons of stuff I won't ever need I guess. Maybe some of the things i must say no to wouldn't be necessary to cut of, if I found the balance.
That leads us to the second part, our collections.
To start this part, let me say I killed mine. Again and again.
I started like ten years ago...to be honest I can't really remember when the hobby smashed into my life.
Having 20 Euro a month, plus some little money I earned mowing lawns and alike, I really just had what was needed. Then I discovered something great and hellish alike...Ebay. Suddenly I had the possibility to lay my hands on old miniatures I could strip the paint of, on books long out of production, limited stuff...oh god my life changed that day and I became a hardcore collector. Indeed, I always was. Starting with stones, glass sherds, feathers I collected since I was a little kid. Some people say thats the way people with star sign cancer are...hey it's an excuse, isn't it^^
But this was different, it needed to be paid. I own some treasures I am very proud of and that were really hard to get, searching the web week for week. And there is the rest...tons of miniatures, paints and even unboxed kits. You all know that, damn that looks so cool...I could convert that one day or play the army another...spiral of doom.
I reached the point of to much a few times, and than I sorted out. It always hurt and I hated it. This year brought the biggest sale out, I ripped the collection apart that had accompanied me through three flats, years of life and some hard times. Over thirty packages, some whole armies left my life forever. And it burnt, it hurt it nearly drove me mad...but I had to pay my next year of studies and there was a simple logic of what was more important.
I am doing it again right now. You'll find the links at the end of this article. But again, something is different.
It doesn't hurt this time.
I needed money, not for my rent, not for my studies but for something I love spending it for. To visit my girl in Japan, celebrating new year with her, a year we will discover together. Flesh and blood, real life feelings, a human being. I almost didn't go because I just couldn't afford it. One night, I stood in my studio, looking at all the books, the kits...and I realized again something had changed in my heart and mind. For the first time I saw just paper and plastic. I am not talking about the treasures of cause, they are as special for me as they always were...but I also knew, deep done that I would sell them, If life would require it to help out the people I love. Letting go doesn't feel that hard this time, indeed it's easy. Stuff I never thought I actually didn't need is for sale.
And it doesn't feel like ripping my collection apart, more like sorting out and making room for more things, things I didn't just find cool but I love to own.
I will collect again, I know and I don't fight it.
But this change in mind showed me what this collecting is all about for me. Not about owning all this stuff, having it as material, just in case I could need it sometimes.
It is about the collecting, the thrill to finally get your hands on something and as the stones and sherds and feathers back in the old days....sharing it with someone. I always gave them away in the end or showed them to my parents, so they could share their beauty. I remembered these days.
Having them all laying around for eternity never was the point. Not for me.
If you are still reading, here is an opportunity to add something to your collection.
Maybe you will give it away someday, but it will bring you joy until then I think.
Codizes, rulebooks, kits and a nice painted tank are up this week...find them here on Ebay.
Have a nice day my friends

Complete How to speedpaint an Imperial Bastion Video Tutorial
As this goes direct to our tutorial archive, I thought it would be good to have all parts in one post.
Easier to find I'd guess.
The subject was how to paint a terrain piece, really quick but still high gaming standard.
I spent 4 hours on painting the bastion and two more buildings and documented everything for you.
You'll need and airbrush and oil colors to try the shown techniques yourself.
This was my first attempt on filming my work and editing video material, so it won't be the best around, but I think it explains the work and that's its purpose. I speeded the video material up a bit, so you don't have to watch 4 hours. Everything from start to end is shown.
I hope you'll enjoy watching and trying this out. Please feel free to give me some feedback!
To close this post, I'd like to show you a group shot of all the buildings that were done during this painting session.

Part two of our bastion video and insprational link collection!
Hello my friends!
While old daddy nurgle still holds me in his fangs, my voice is returning slow but steady. So I was able to record the audios for the second part of the bastion video. Expect part three (the final one) tomorrow.
1.) Kings of war week on Beasts of War
The guys over at Beasts of War are having a theme week. They are talking about the background of Mantic's Kings of War, unpack some Boxes, talk over the factions and even show us a test game! I just recently discovered their channel and I am really flashed. When not having theme weeks, they are producing battle reports, reviews and tutorials. There are loads of content to discover!
Kings of War is around for a while now and I really like the direction they are going. I used some of their models my self, their zombie and ghoul boxes are the core forces of my nurgle plague zombie army! I saw they even produce a zombylypse box now that will fit perfect in!
I embedded one of their videos so you can have a look! All credits to them!
2. Terran Scapes Youtube channel
The second channel I'd like to introduce to you is terran scapes. I am in love with it right now!
As I lay sick the best part of the last two weeks, I had plenty of time to watch their videos. Terran Scape is a shop/company producing very high quality terrain. He shows his progress and reviews to let you exactly know what you'll get for your money, you can purchase painted or unpainted terrain, even whole gaming boards! He also has very nice tutorials, for example the using and effects of different kinds of model water I never heard of before! Give him a look!
His work inspired me to start some terrain again myself! I work on my city fight project again and build a fantasy stronghold manner right now! His voice is very comfortable and he has a cool way to explain everything. I really like his work.
thanks to this channel, I am rolling again :) |

Aaaaaand....TAKE! Our first video tutorial online!
Hello my friends!
I am really happy to present you part one of our first video tutorial today! It's about painting an Imperial bastion.
This one really didn't want to be seen it seamed from time to time. From equipment problems to a week in bed, feeling like papa nurgle would chase me from fever to fever...but in the end, it became quite nice I guess.
I am gonna record the audio comments for parts two and three now. Stay tuned and let us know, what tutorials you'd like to see!
And don't forget, it's Sunday again and that means ending auctions on Ebay.
It's the last time I try to sell my predator, if it doesn't find a new owner today, I will take that fact as destinies will and paint an army around it. Maybe. Someday. You know what I mean....
Have a nice Sunday everyone!

Ebay Reminder!
Hello my friends. Todays post is kind of advertisement and asking for your help!
This week we have something on sale again! Find the Predator, the limited dark angels codex and a set of mines of moria here on EBAY .
As some of you may have seen, we launched three new videos this week! And more are in the making.
The camera equipment, reference books, new colors..last weeks were pretty expensive here at the studio.
So what does this dreamer want you may ask...his problem if the hobby is expensive...and you are right!
I don't ask you to buy stuff you don't need, but it would be awesome if you could share the word, so maybe someone who actually wants that stuff finds it! Running a blog, studying architecture and having two jobs to pay for it is really hard sometimes and as the rents and everything gets more and more expensive here in Dresden, thoughts how long this will work are daily nightmares.
I love this blog, I love getting these 90+ pictures step by steps out to you and soon video tutorials. The last years were amazing and I never expected this to grow so large. Please help us keeping the work up by spreading the word, showing us to your friends. So we can dream together for the next two years!
Yours,
Martin

Review about my one on one Workshop with GeOrc on 20th till 22nd September
Jumbalaya people!
Last weekend I've been once again to Berlin. This time it was for an one on one workshop with my buddy, master in law, and this time teacher GeOrc ( https://www.facebook.com/pages/GeOrc/299036349581 ). If you didn't know GeOrc yet, he's in the painting hobby since 1998 and since then he horded a heap of golden, silver and bronze demons at the Golden Demon competitions. He's well known for his smoooooth blendings and especially for his NMM style (see some old works on CMON here http://www.coolminiornot.com/artist/GeOrc?browseid=6806572 -he didn't stop painting, just stopped posting them there as he moved to Facebook).

Awesome project for all explorators out there! - Back the worlds cheapest 3d printer for 100 bucks!
The Omnissiah surely is with the guys over at Peachy Printer!
There are a lot of cool kickstarters out there, a few I backed, many I couldn't afford.
But this one really got me. Have a look on their video and you'll understand why I think.
This guys tried to invent something affordable, something that could change our daily life and happens without the big industrial players. I am in love with it!
Kitbashing the first prototype from household stuff, developing it further and further with the goal of changing the world.
A 3d printer for 100 $ ? Serious? I don't care weather the technology is fine enough for our miniature needs, I don't care weather I have to sand the models for hours, I just want to see this stuff develop!
Sure, it's not what the high end & high price models offer, but imagine what it COULD be some day! If people give them the chance to develop and produce without the big companies.
I surely will try to raise the money with my next auctions, it is fine enough for rough terrain and conversion parts, which I model with my cad software every day.
And if it should be just an "expenisve" toy afterall, I don't care. I think this is something many of us could use, AND effort.
(You may notice, I have a crush on this)
So if you can spare the money, maybe buy one unit or character less a month and join. I have a feeling that this could be the beginning of something big.
Read you soon my friends, with new content, new tutorials and new equipment that pushes our possibilities! A very special person offered us some financial support to push our dream forwards, the dream of helping you with our experience, of creating a site worth visiting and maybe some day, make a living of our passion.
And as this person really helped my dreams develop, I wish the guys over at peachy the same support and help!

Ebay tanks and Give Away Winners
Good Morning dear readers!
Lets start with making people happy! As there were only two participants in our Basing Give Away, I decided to let you both win! Thanks for your suggestions!
The winners are Crazy Baldhead and Zab !
Please contact me and let me know which set you'd like to get and where you live. I'll cast the Bases and send them out to you.
Talking about shipping stuff...there is something in my mind...it's been a while, so the memory is cloudy.
Shipping...you ship sold stuff, don't you?
...
Yes! This week will see auctions again!
Space Marine Predator
This was one of the two tanks I painted at the painting class in Göppingen to demonstrate techniques.
Although it looks kinda Blood Ravens like, it can be fielded as Blood Angel tank or for any own chapter!
Or you want to start your own little Marine Strike Force? No problem, start with him! I also accept army commissions ;)
Ebay!
Imperial Guard Leman Russ
This was the second workshop tank ( two in one weekend AND teaching 5 people, I am kind of proud) .
Urban Camo and a LOT rust, as I explained rusting with him.
Ebay!
other stuff
As usual, collectors stuff like the limited codex Dark Angels and the no longer sold Mines of Moria set!
Why so quiet?
Some may have noticed there are fewer posts here this days. The reason is that my girl will leave for a half year trip to Japan in a few days and we use every minute we have until than.
But there are some real nice projects growing, a massive documentation of my first commission army (White Scars, tons of bikes, lances and Battle Damage) and the purchase of a new camcorder to give you some Youtube Tutorials and Miniature videos!
So stay tuned and till the next post, we say goodbye (and do some "hidden" advertising for our friends over at Painting Buddha )

Short review on Emuse's Step by Step on the walking dead
Well this year Emuse made a indiegogo campaign to collect money for his trip to the crystal brush contest in the USA. As I backed his campaign I got the first released part of the stuff he promised for the backers!
It's the step by step on his the walking dead scene which took second best of show and gold in diorama at the crystal brush.
Here's the link to the blogpost on emuse's blog concerning the step by step:
So first thing I can say about the step by step is simply bravo to emuse! It's
really professionally done. The layout just suits the scene from the layout effects
to the colours just perfect. Also imo they are very well used to underline the
text structure. For example on one side
the the old chapter is on a bright surface and when the new chapter starts its
blended over with an cool effect to a dark colour. All these colours in the
layout are also in the scene so it fits perfectly. Very atmospheric!
On the photos
you always can see what has been described in the text, it's never like
"well he said he did this and that but I can't see the difference to the
previous photo" especially when it's about the paintjob. Also you can zoom
in 200% and the photos are still sharp. So you can enjoy every detail of the
scene especially on the detail shots!
The
tutorial itself is just like the rest pure awesomeness in perfection! In the
text it's always described what the intentions were for what's been done on the
scenic composition, the colour choice etc. It starts with the description of
the idea for the scene and the inspiration material used, goes over to the planning of the scenic composition -it's described
why which element is where-, building it and painting it -explaining what mood
with which colours was intented to be achieved and stuff like that-. I myself really like it a lot when it's told WHY
the colours used are used and WHY the zombie lies where he lies, that's very
well done in this tutorial!
So from my
side I think this is a really, really aaaawwwweeeesssssooooommmmeeee tutorial!
Thanks for that!
I can't
wait to see the next ones and to receive the combined printed versions!
For the
ones that didn't back the campaign I can only hope the printed version of the
tutorials will be made available for them at some point in the
future...otherwise they've really missed something!
Read you soonish!

Workshop Review - Vehicle and Weathering Workshop Göppingen
As promised, impressions from my first painting class. Dive into our weekend !
You can find the gallery with all finished tanks here!
5 students, one teacher, and no air left to breathe inhabited the classroom for three days, we started early and painted into the nights. Most of them never used an airbrush before, except to spray a basic tone on their infantry. So we started with theory, dilution, safety, how to use which products. Presentations and stock pictures were followed by practical exercises and sometimes, pizza and pretzels.
We started with rusting our vehicles, using basic layers and different techniques of chipping, from hairspray to masking it.
Every step was shown and than the guys could try everything on their spare side plates. Camo, contrasting colors, masking big areas were following steps.
Saturday was full of masking, creating camo and painting first details, like chip highlights and wires.
We used Sunday to paint the tracks, work with oil colors and pigments and finish our work. All tanks were finished or really close to it, good job guys!
The weekend was very special for me, standing in front of everyone instead of listening for the first time. My students were really nice, we had much fun and the results impress me. All in all, I think my first painting class was a full success.
Read you later my friends.
